Utah and Arizona Galleries

The area of the Colorado Plateau, covering southern Utah and northern Arizona, offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. The elevated plateau has been gouged and sculpted by water and wind erosion into incredibly dynamic and poetic forms.  The photographic possibilities are literally endless, given the changing light during the day and year, and the geographic area available.  Of the numerous parks in the southwest, Zion and Bryce are but two of the smaller ones.  The following gallery pages are comprised of over 100 images.

In November I traveled to Zion National Park for two weeks, and met up with friends Wendy and David (www.natureandwildlifeimagery.com) who are excellent company and talented photographers.  Shooting with friends is always more enjoyable through the shared experience, but especially so when the weather doesn't cooperate.  There was more than one morning best described by the term 'breakfast light', unfortunately only realized after we had been standing in the cold for over an hour waiting for 'dawn'.  While Dave couldn't stay for the full two weeks, we managed to cram in a trip up to Bryce Canyon and Kodachrome Basin, and a day hike in wetsuits up the Virgin River in Zion to the area called The Narrows.  I managed a few more days in Bryce on my own before the second week in Zion with Wendy and a side-trip to Page, Arizona to shoot Horseshoe Bend.  One humorous and disturbing sign at the Zion visitor center was what to see for the "3 hour Zion experience".  I was there for close to two weeks and was just beginning to see and explore the underlying beauty that goes well beyond the spectacular canyon scenes.

We stayed in Springdale, UT while shooting in Zion.  There were three main photo galleries in town, all good, but the one that impressed me the most was Michael Fatali's (www.fatali.com).  Michael shoots with an 8x10 view camera, and hand-prints his own Ilfochrome (ex-Cibachrome) prints up to 40 inches wide.  The images speak for themselves, and the print quality is truly amazing.  Theresa gave us an excellent tour of all the images, and we were fortunate to meet Michael and share some pizza and wine.
