About the images and prints.

My interest in digital printing was initially driven by a desire to print my own colour images. I have since converted over to printing B&W on the digital printer, with the benefit to both the environment and myself of fewer chemicals. Working in the digital domain, I have also found that the digital process allows the photographer very subtle control of the appearance of the print. I usually prefer a certain ‘visual texture’ to the print that is otherwise difficult to achieve. Digital prints are not ‘better’ nor ‘worse’ than traditional prints, just different.

The images have all originated from film, either B&W negative film (e.g. Ilford Delta 100 or FP4 Plus), or colour transparency film (Fuji Velvia or Provia), and then scanned into digital format using a high resolution (up to 4000 pixels/inch) Nikon Super Coolscan 4000ED scanner.  The images are then processed using Adobe Photoshop software.  The intent  has generally been to create a digital image true to the tones, colour and mood of the original.  Typically this involves similar manipulation to that achieved through conventional wet chemistry printing processes.  As you can see, however, some of the images have been intentionally manipulated to generate some artistically different effects.  Indeed, some of the B&W photos originated as colour slides.  The prints in the size ranges given below are all made on an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 inkjet printer, which uses UltraChrome pigment-based inks with excellent colour range.  The combination of these inks and acid-free professional inkjet papers provide a print that has archival longevity rivaling that of standard commercial chemical prints.  (For more detailed information on archival testing please see the web site for Wilhelm Imaging Research.)  Larger print sizes can also be provided, so please contact us with your requests.

Limited editions.

All prints are signed by the artist and are part of a numbered series, limited to typically 50 pieces.

Colour matching.

Care has been taken to match the working monitor and the printer output.  The web images are also brought as close to the master files as reasonably possible, given the different colour gamuts involved.  What you see on your monitor may be slightly different, depending on many factors.  When ordering prints, please expect some differences in the printed image from what you see on your screen.  I hope that you will be pleasantly surprised by the broad colour gamut and tactile quality of the print, the latter being the result of sharpening functions in Photoshop that are difficult to achieve through conventional means.

Mounting of prints.

For optimum print colour fastness, it is recommended that the prints are mounted to acid-free mat board, under glass and displayed out of direct sunlight.

Sizes.

Three sizes of prints are standard, and are all referenced to the approximate full-frame proportions of the 35mm film format.  Some images have obviously been cropped for improved compositional aspects.  If in doubt about the size of an apparently non-standard aspect ratio image, please inquire.

The 7x10 inch image is printed on 8.5 x 11 inch paper (standard letter size).

The 9x14 inch image is printed on 11.7 x 16.5 inch paper (A3 size).

The 11x17 inch image is printed on 13 x 19 inch paper (super B size).

All prints are carefully rolled and packed in a mailing tube for shipment.
